SHORE student Tom St John can make a point or two about patriotism.
Tom, 15, of Mosman, who is in Year 10, has made it through five rounds of competition to compete in the national finals of the Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award to be held in Launceston next Monday.
His subject is patriotism and when asked if he is patriotic, Tom answers emphatically: "Absolutely. How could you not be. This is a beautiful country," he said.
"Australia is a very good country and we conduct ourselves well. However, we do take a lot of things for granted." Tom makes the distinction between patriotism and nationalism.
"Patriotism is a good thing when it used in the right way and not as an excuse for bad behaviour," he said. "Patriotism is love of country while nationalism can be expressed as people who think they are better than other people."
Shore selected Tom to take part in the Legacy competition which involved a semi-final at Parliament House and a state final at the Art Gallery of NSW.
