PULSE: Japan's current-account surplus narrows in May

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Japan's current-account surplus narrowed in May, the Finance Ministry said Monday, with the result missing forecasts. The surplus shrank to 540.7 billion yen ($5.33 billion) from April's ?750 billion, as exports rose 9.1% from a year earlier, and imports increased by 9.6%. The result missed expectations for a ?595 billion surplus cited in a Dow Jones Newswires and Nikkei survey of economists. The result marked the first time Japan has logged a second consecutive current-account surplus since October 2010, according to Dow Jones Newswires. The Japanese yen and Nikkei Stock Average futures showed little reaction to the data.
