Once feared in Europe and Africa for its ability to wipe out herds of cattle, rinderpest can now join small pox as the second disease to be globally eradicated. In the 14 September issue, Mariner et al. review the challenges and successes in the global effort. Key achievements were the development of a thermostable vaccine, the recruitment of pastoralists for training and administration of vaccine to their cattle, and complete vaccination coverage, despite occasionally hazardous environmental and political conditions.
